Green Team

Established well over a decade ago, GroundWork Elizabeth’s Green Team Program has educated, invested, touched and employed hundreds of diverse youth, providing platforms for young people to effect change in themselves as they work to understand, improve and advocate for natural environments where they live, and in our society as a whole. Many Green Team members have gone on to roles in the non-profit and private sectors.

Green Team members are young stewards learning, working, and teaching about the environment. While many of our Green Team projects are centered in and around Elizabeth, others have taken us across the country, enabling our Green Team members to have first-hand experience in making the planet a greener place to live.

Groundwork Elizabeth Green Team’s recent work and activities include:

  • Working along fragile watershed areas to study, document, and repair them.
  • Creating nature trails at Elizabeth River Trail, the Elizabeth Nature Center at the Peterstown Community Center, and the Arthur Kill
  • Vegetation control measures throughout Union County, Great Swamp NWR and several National Parks
  • Led nature explorations for adults and children
  • Learning and working at National Parks, from Morristown to Gateway, to Rocky Mountain and Yellowstone

The Elizabeth Nature Center (ENC) is the Green Team’s home base. At the ENC, located in the Peterstown Community Center, can be found our electronic field guides, outdoor demonstration gardens, and an observation deck overlooking the Elizabeth River.
